Dental workers and dentists are usually overlooked in national and local statistics relating to occupational musculoskeletal disorders. A lot of smaller studies, surveys, and interviews show the relevancy of occupational musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in dental workers.

The inventor of Exodent used his father, who is a dentist, as his inspiration for his design. His father has been a dentist for 30 years and would come home from work complaining about his chronic back pain. After some research, there were no back braces on the market that specifically catered to the pains of dentists, and Exodent was born.

Based on primary and secondary research, the neck area, back area, and shoulders area are the most vulnerable areas of the body in terms of occupational MSDs in dentists. Massages, physical therapy, and dental loupes greatly help with neck and upper back pain. However, shoulder pain and lower back pain are harder to treat due to the nature of the work.

Studies all over the globe have found similar results as a study done by Feng et al. in China on 272 dentists. The study found that 88% of the dentists reported at least one MSD and 83% reported neck pain. The dental profession is one of the most harmful careers in terms of musculoskeletal injuries and a plethora of clinical studies have proved this.
